what is pet medial patella luxation (mpl)?

Pet medial patella luxation (MPL) occurs when the patella, or kneecap, moves out of its normal position due to underlying bone deformities. This can cause discomfort, pain, and mobility issues for your pet. The effects of MPL can range from mild to severe, impacting your pet’s quality of life if left untreated.

comprehensive orthopedic solutions

At Fetherston Veterinary Orthopedics, we offer a range of advanced orthopedic procedures to address MPL and restore mobility and comfort for your pet. Our team is highly skilled in performing:

  • Patella Groove Replacement (PGR): In cases with severe cartilage damage, a patellar groove resurfacing prosthesis is implanted where the patella sits. Replacing the diseased cartilage reduces pain and helps to stabilize the kneecap.
  • Distal Femoral Osteotomy (DFO): DFO is a surgical technique used to correct MPL by altering the alignment of the femur, improving patellar tracking and reducing the risk of luxation.
  • Tibial Tuberosity Transposition Tool and Technique (TTTT2): TTTT2 is an innovative approach to reposition the tibial tuberosity to realign the patella. This technique reduces healing time and complications relative to traditional techniques.
