Pet Arthroscopy
We offer advanced pet arthroscopy procedures at Fetherston Veterinary Orthopedics in Ukiah, CA, utilizing modern technology to diagnose and treat joint conditions. Our specialized services include arthroscopy of the stifle, elbow, shoulder, and tarsal joints, providing high-definition image quality for accurate assessment and precise treatment.
What is Arthroscopy?
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows veterinarians to visualize, diagnose, and treat joint problems. Unlike traditional open surgery, arthroscopy requires only small incisions through which a tiny camera (NanoScope needle arthroscopy) is inserted, providing a clear view of the joint interior.
Benefits of Arthroscopy for Pets
Arthroscopy offers several advantages over traditional surgery. It is less invasive, leading to reduced pain and faster recovery times for pets. The small incisions also lower the risk of infection and other complications. Additionally, arthroscopy provides veterinarians with a detailed view of the joint, allowing for more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatments.
When is Pet Arthroscopy Necessary?
Pet arthroscopy is recommended for various joint conditions, including ligament tears, cartilage damage, and joint inflammation. Common indications for arthroscopy include:
Elbow Joint
Fragmented coronoid process (FCP), osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), and ununited anconeal process (UAP).
Shoulder Joint
Biceps tendonitis, supraspinatus tendinopathy, and shoulder instability.
Tarsal Joint (Ankle)
Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and fractures.
Stifle Joint (Knee)
Cruciate ligament tears, meniscal injuries, and patellar luxation.
The Arthroscopy Procedure
During the arthroscopy procedure, a small incision is made near the joint, and the NanoScope needle arthroscopy is inserted. The camera provides a magnified view of the joint on a high-definition monitor, allowing the veterinarian to identify any abnormalities. Specialized instruments can be inserted through additional small incisions to perform necessary repairs, such as removing damaged tissue or repairing ligaments.
Recovery and Postoperative Care
After arthroscopy, pets generally experience less pain and swelling compared to traditional surgery. Most pets can return home the same day, although some may require overnight observation. Postoperative care may include pain management, restricted activity, and physical therapy to aid in recovery.
